Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure in Turkey

The laparoscopic sleeve Gastrectomy often called the sleeve is performed by removing approximately 80% of the stomach. The remaining stomach is the size of a banana. This smaller stomach cannot hold as much food. It also produces less of the appetite-regulating hormone ghrelin, which may lessen the desire to eat.

How is gastric sleeve surgery performed?

  • First the surgeon will give the patient general anesthesia, so the patient will be asleep during the procedure.
  • Second, the surgeon will make a small cut in his/her abdomen (about 1 cm long) and insert a port. They will pump carbon dioxide gas through the port to expand the abdomen.
  • Then, they will place a small lighted video camera (laparoscope) through the port. The camera will project the insides onto a screen.
  • Through one to three additional incisions, the surgeon will insert additional ports and complete the procedure using long, narrow tools.
  • They will measure out the gastric sleeve, then divide and separate the remainder of the stomach using a surgical stapler.
  • The surgeon will remove the remainder of the stomach, then close the incisions.

How long does gastric sleeve surgery take?

Compared to other weight loss surgery procedures, a sleeve Gastrectomy is a relatively short and simple operation. It takes about 60 to 90 minutes. The surgeon may still want the patient to stay in the hospital for one to two days afterwards. This way, they can help manage his/her pain and temporary side effects of surgery, such as nausea.

What is the recovery time from gastric sleeve surgery?

Patient should give his/her self a good month before he/she expect to feel quite like him/herself or return to work at full capacity. During this time, many people feel tired as their bodies work to recover while adjusting to limited calories. In the early weeks, the patient will only be able to tolerate a liquid diet. Overtime, she/he will gradually progress to a soft diet, and finally, solid food.

The average weight loss is 25% to 30% of the body weight in the first one to two years. That means if the patient weighed 136 kg before surgery, he/she would lose 45 kg He/she might lose more or less, depending on the lifestyle habits the patient adopt after surgery. Some people also regain some weight, but the overall average weight loss of 25% to 30% of his/her body weight is consistent over five years.
